University Ownership and Student Inventor Rights

This invention is based on the same ideas as our invention. Although there are some similarities there are some differences as well. This design is made primarily of square tubing. It is said to be adjustable, but is subject to be limited adjustment due to, what seems to be, no way to lock the tubing and shaft. The most significant difference is how these two mount on the pintles:

  • Their invention mounts solely on the pintles when they are facing in the upward position. This method of mounting will work but has some flaws in my opinion.
    • Livestock could get their head in or under the gate and simply lift it off the pintles.
    • Someone can enter a locked gate with no tools by simply lifting the gate off the hinges.

This invention is made from round tubing or shaft, whereas ours is made from flat plate or channel iron. This invention uses its own hinge assembly instead of using common hinges like ours. It appears to rotate in 360deg, but only by adding additional segments to the hinge. It’s said to be adjustable, assuming it’s by meshing two notched blocks together at desired location. Ours is adjustable by slotted holes with bolts.

US11384582B2

This invention seems to be based on the same ideas. Some of the differences between these are: this invention doesn’t use common gate hinges therefore the invention cannot be removed, and the gate be reinstalled without the invention. Our invention is made of two flat plates or channel iron whereas theirs is much more difficult. It is made of multiple round threaded shafts and nuts.

It uses its own hinges, not common hinges. It’s unclear if it rotates 180deg both ways. Does not appear to be used on common farm gates.

US4047332A

Drawings show, it is only being used on chain link gates. The differences in design are visually obvious. The invention only allows the gate to open 180deg one way.

Obvious difference in design. It uses its own hinges and what appears to be wooden gates. It’s not apparent as to how it would rotate 180deg both ways.
